AAEDC’s Amy Gowan featured in Baltimore Business Journal article on affordable housing

August 15, 2024

The Baltimore Business Journal featured commentary from AAEDC President and CEO Amy Gowan in the following article looking at how a lack of affordable housing impacts businesses and economic development in the Greater Baltimore region:

Housing and the job market – Why a lack of affordable homes is hurting local businesses

The article reported that “Anne Arundel County has a competitive housing market influenced by rising housing prices and limited inventory, creating price points beyond what the average household can afford,” and included the following quote from Gowan:

“High housing costs impact the ability for employers to attract and retain talent, especially for on-site jobs where telework is not an option. Our leading industries include government, national defense, trade and transportation, health care, manufacturing, and hospitality. For these institutions and industry types to draw from a local pool of workers, a full spectrum of housing types and prices is necessary.”

It then reported that Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman has introduced legislation to increase workforce housing opportunities to address these issues, and concluded with Gowan noting that the county is also working with regional economic development organizations to support state legislation in 2025 that could help finance more affordable housing through redevelopment authorities.
