Welcome to the third installment of First Friday Success Stories. On the first Friday of every month, we will feature an area business that has worked with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) counselor housed at the AAEDC office in Annapolis. The SBDC counselor is on hand to assist local entrepreneurs and small to mid-size businesses.

1. How did the client learn about the SBDC and what was the problem or issue they need assistance.
Angela Hill learned about the SBDC assistance from an online resource. She was looking to start her own private practice for therapy since she is a licensed clinical professional counselor, national certified counselor, and approved supervisor in clinical professional counseling with over 18 years’ experience in the field of counseling and therapy.

2. Describe or list the activities the counselor performed to help the client resolve/assist with their business problem or issue.
Candace Pruett assisted the client through the beginning business stages such as opening the business in MD, cash flow projections, opening a business bank account, setting up an accounting system, and creating a LinkedIn and mobile friendly website. Angela Hill continued to apply to different insurance panels through her start up process as well. Candace went over the government contracting start-up checklist including registering on SAM, DUNS number, NAICS codes, eMaryland, etc.

3. What was the final outcome or success for this client?
Angela Hill has successfully opened her own private practice. She has left teaching full time, and now works for her LLC full time with over 100 regular clients. She has her own office in Odenton, MD.

4. What is the current status of this client?
Angela Hill still meets with her SBDC consultant, Candace Pruett, on a regular basis. Currently, she is in the process of obtaining her WOSB/EDWOSB certification from the SBA along with her MBE/DBE/SBE certification through MDOT. Candace Pruett will assist Angela Hill through the government contracting steps to getting started.
